Treasure Island Skate Park Update

June 13, 2009 by leftsidesf

We have made great progress on the Treasure Island Skate Park. We have been moved once again, from the tennis courts to a 52,000 square foot lot, due to complaints from Job Corp. across the street. This is a step backwards to make a step forward. We can now start from scratch and build a skate park to our standards. There is a new plan, and a new concept for building this park. Treasure Island is allowing us to use found objects on the Island. So far we are using highway barriers for some transition, rubble for fill, and concrete blocks. Aaron Hazel is leading the construction along with other professionals such as Tony Miorana from Border Town. The construction will still be volunteer work from the community being lead by experts. Currently we are waiting on Treasure Island Development Agency on budgeting our materials list. Details of the plan are still to be worked out. This plan is not final.

Golden Gate Park Update

April 1, 2009 by leftsidesf

The San Francisco Skateboarding Association had a meeting at city hall on March 30th, 2009 with Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi and Rich Hillis from the Mayor’s Office, regarding action for a skate park at Stanyan and Waller. The SFSA and Left Side will hold a fundraiser this summer to raise funds for the park. Mirkarimi as well as Hillis informed us that we have their support, and thay they will find the funds for this project. It is apparent that skaters in the city need to speak out and demand skateboarding rights in San Francisco. The city needs to hear this directly from the skaters in numbers. The RECREATION AND PARK COMMISSION holdsĀ  public meetings at city hall the 2nd of evey month in room 316. Pubic comment at this meeting will be an effective way to address this issue. Members of Left Side and the SFSA will be there.
